Three Mindful Questions-
Connect with the Present Moment

By becoming aware of our thoughts as they arise and pass away, we also become aware of the possibility of peace amidst our busy lives.  Staying calm is easy enough when things are smooth sailing, but for busy folks, the ocean of life often feels a little more choppy.  How do we navigate these seemingly troubled waters?

When the going gets tough, taking a deep breath and asking ourselves some simple questions can create the space necessary for renewed calm to settle into.  It’s not our thoughts, or even our circumstances, that create stress and suffering in our lives.  In fact, it’s our reaction to these things that gets us stuck in a loop of stressful negativity.  Next time you feel at the mercy of life’s challenges, see how these questions may allow you to respond with your heart rather than react with your mind.

If I let go of this frustration, will it do me or anyone else harm?

In the midst of a difficult moment, we can convince ourselves that there is some necessity in remaining frustrated and tightly wound.  It can feel as though any relaxation around the situation would result in a loss of control and things ultimately becoming worse.  A reminder that relaxing  our grip around frustration is the least harmful action for ourselves and others can open up space within which to diffuse the situation.

What advice would I give to others in a similar situation?

It is often far easier to extend compassion and friendly advice to people other than ourselves.  There is a tendency, especially among high achievers, to only offer grace and acceptance to others, while demanding perfection from our own lives.  If you find yourself caught in a loop of negative self-talk, breathe deeply to create some space between yourself and your situation, and extend some caring advice like you would to a good friend, your child, or even a stranger.

How could I learn and grow from this situation?

Noone is free from difficulty in life, but our mindset can often determine whether adversity causes us to feel stuck, or rather empowers us to overcome challenges and become stronger in the process.  It’s important to pause and reflect on how life’s more difficult moments can lead to a greater capacity for perseverance and personal growth.  How has this been true for you in the past?

Deciding to follow a new path can be a source of stress for many people, but with an attitude of curiosity rooted in mindful questions, these obstacles can be transformed into bridges toward greater autonomy and confidence on your health and wellness journey.
